Ledger: out of the khata

For a business that's outgrown its register: shops, traders, services and their accountants.

Meet Tariq, who's made up. He trades spare parts in Lahore, and everything is on credit. His khata goes back years, and it's in two people's handwriting.
  1. 9:00A customer says he paid last month. Tariq can't find it. They argue, politely.
  2. 11:00A supplier wants paying. Is there enough to pay him? He doesn't really know.
  3. 2:00Someone owes him from four months ago. He only remembers because he saw him at a wedding.
  4. 5:00The bank statement and the khata don't match. He'll look at it later.
  5. MarchA bag of receipts goes to the accountant. A figure comes back. He can't explain it.
